About Penang Mutiara

Penang has long been known as the Pearl of the Orient. Mutiara, the Malay word for pearl, reflects both that heritage and our aim: to present the very best of the state to every visitor.

Penang Mutiara is an independent travel guide covering Penang Island and Seberang Perai on the mainland. Established in 2011, the site provides practical, carefully checked information on attractions, food, culture and travel planning. Our readers include first-time visitors, weekend travellers from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, and those planning a longer stay.

What you’ll find here

Our guides cover the things people actually ask us about. Where to eat char kway teow. How to get from the airport to George Town. Which temples are worth the climb, and what time to beat the heat. We write about heritage streets, hawker centres, beaches, hills and festivals, and we keep the practical details in one place so you can plan without opening twenty tabs.

How we write our guides

We try to keep things honest and useful.

  • We check our facts. Prices, opening hours and fares come from official sources wherever possible, and we check them regularly.
  • We update often. Stalls move, bus routes change and prices go up. If something looks out of date, tell us and we’ll fix it.
  • We say what we think. If a place is overrated or too crowded at noon, we’ll say so.

Our partners

Penang Mutiara is free to read. Some businesses support the site as partners, and you can see them on our Directory page. Our partners never decide what we recommend in our travel guides.
